"Capturing Light: A Journey into Photography and Self-Discovery"

For anyone interested in photography, LHL PrEP Navigator, Claudio Vergara, has one key piece of advice: Just do it. If you have a phone, you’re already equipped. But photography, he believes, is more than just having the right gear—it’s about noticing what catches your attention and reflecting on why. The images you create, he says, are reflections of your unique perspective.

Finding the Passion in Photography

Claudio’s journey with photography began with humble resources in Chile. A college grant helped him upgrade from a point-and-shoot, and he started experimenting with digital photography. Later, his passion evolved when he discovered film photography, which he describes as a game-changer. Film, with its need for precision and patience, taught him the commitment behind each shot and reminded him of creativity’s roots. You can view his portfolio, Andino Photography, here.

To Claudio, photography is an act of mindfulness and self-reflection. Each image is a way to explore why he’s drawn to a particular moment, making his work more authentic. He’s largely self-taught, using YouTube and online resources to master techniques like the “triangle of light”—the interplay between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

The Art of Self-Reflection and Mindfulness

For Claudio, photography has become a mindful, reflective practice. Every time he takes a photo, he pauses to ask, Why am I drawn to this? This approach not only hones his skills but also deepens his self-awareness. As he learns more about himself, his images grow increasingly authentic. Through photography, he’s found a way to share his experiences and communicate in ways he once struggled to express.

Working with different types of cameras—from a phone to a DSLR to a film camera—has taught him various lessons. Experimenting with light, composition, and different setups has shown Claudio how they can alter the tone and impact of an image. These skills extend beyond photography itself, fostering patience, precision, and an appreciation for detail in all aspects of his life.

Learning the Craft

Claudio is a self-taught photographer who found his education online. Claudio believes in the value of diverse perspectives, seeking multiple voices and viewpoints to expand his understanding of technique, composition, and storytelling.

His advice to beginners is straightforward: start with what you have, pay attention to what inspires you, and build from there. Practice is essential, and Claudio encourages others to follow photographers they admire, take classes, and embrace mistakes as part of the learning process.

Photography and Work: Finding Purpose at Erie

Claudio’s photography goes hand in hand with his role at Erie as a PrEP Navigator. Since 2020, he has worked with uninsured, HIV-positive patients, guiding them through the complexities of insurance and medication benefits. Photography has enhanced his capacity for empathy, allowing him to see each patient’s unique story with compassion and patience. Inspired by the social movements of 2020, Claudio recommitted himself to supporting communities of color, using his role and photography to highlight lives that often go unseen and to combat systemic injustices.

In collaboration with Erie’s Development team, Claudio captures images of coworkers, events, and patients from diverse backgrounds to support fundraising efforts that benefit those Erie serves. His photography celebrates the resilience and dignity of his community, giving a face to the organization’s mission.

Honoring Family and Community: Photography as Cultural Expression

In 2021, Claudio participated in a project with the Department of Cultural Affairs, creating a photo booth offering free sessions for families from underrepresented communities. Family, he believes, forms the foundation of one’s identity. Collaborating with members of the Latino Health Leadership program, Claudio captured portraits that honor both personal and cultural heritage.

For Claudio, “family” encompasses not just blood relatives, but anyone who provides support and a sense of belonging. Photography allows him to celebrate these meaningful connections, creating images that are rich in personal and cultural significance.

Looking Ahead: The Future in Focus

Claudio reflects on his journey from viewing the world through a simple camera to capturing moments that resonate deeply with him. Photography has granted him the power to preserve significant moments, and it continues to shape his understanding of himself and his surroundings. Looking to the future, Claudio envisions working with new clients, telling new stories, and continuing to evolve in his craft.

For aspiring photographers, Claudio offers a guiding message: photography is about learning, dedication, and above all, passion. Embrace each step, stay curious, and keep capturing what inspires you.
