By day, Mary Aguilar is a trusted Executive Assistant supporting senior leadership at Erie Family Health Centers. But when the sun goes down, she transforms into Becky Sparkles, a dynamic DJ bringing energy, music, and unforgettable vibes to parties across Illinois and Chicago.
Her journey into the world of DJing began almost by chance. Mary started as an observer before she partnered with an experienced DJ who has been in the business for over 30 years. Mary watched her partner set up intricate equipment—speakers, flashing lights, and music controllers—she became intrigued. Soon, Mary asked to learn how to curate playlists, select the perfect tracks, and adapt music to fit the client’s preferences.
The Rise of Becky Sparkles
Mary’s first solo gig as Becky Sparkles was an all-girls private party. The event was a huge success, cementing her confidence and solidifying her passion for DJing. “I know I can DJ solo, but I prefer working with a partner,” she shares. “Still, it’s empowering to know that I’m capable of doing it on my own.”
Her DJ style is as sparkling as her name. Becky Sparkles plays a wide range of genres, from Tex-Mex country to Motown, rock, and old-school freestyle. One of her proudest moments was that same all-girls party where she was given full creative control. “They told me to do my own thing, and I went all out. It was freeing and made me feel confident in my abilities.”
For events ranging from private gatherings of 100 people to bar parties with 50-60 guests, Becky Sparkles creates immersive experiences with professional setups that include vibrant lights, dynamic speakers, and a curtain of flashing lights.
How DJing and Executive Assisting Go Hand in Hand
As an Executive Assistant, Mary is skilled at multitasking, organization, and client relations—skills that seamlessly translate to her work as Becky Sparkles. “DJing requires focus, coordination, and the ability to handle clients,” she explains. “It’s about knowing when to say no, especially if a client doesn’t want to pay for the time and effort it takes to set up a professional show.”
Her dual roles have also helped her grow personally. “I used to be afraid of public speaking,” Mary admits. “But now, I’m completely out of my shell. If you feel nervous doing something for the first time, that’s a good sign—it means you’re pushing yourself.”
Goals for 2025
While Mary already designs promotional flyers and shares them on her partner’s website, her 2025 goal is to take Becky Sparkles to the next level. She plans to create dedicated business cards for her DJ services, expanding her reach and building her brand. “I want to reach more people and put myself out there,” she says.
